John Tory still leads the Toronto mayoral race, but Doug Ford is not such a distant second. The Mainstreet Technologies poll which surveyed 2409 Toronto voters on September 28th suggests 37 percent of respondents plan to support Tory on election day.  Thirty percent said they would vote for Ford while 21 percent say they support Olivia Chow and 12 percent are undecided.

The election is four weeks form today .and  Tory is launching an ad campaign today with a message of optimism.  “I am getting a lot of positive response to this positive message that’s saying it’s time to bring an end to this business of dividing the city on the basis of downtown versus the suburbs,” Tory explained at a campaign stop on Sunday, “We all live in Toronto.  We all love Toronto.  We all need transit to get built.  We all need jobs to be created here; more jobs for our kids and for other people who don’t have jobs.”

Tory’s campaign focuses on his SmartTrack transit plan, which candidate Olivia Chow continues to criticize.  “I think a lot of people haven’t quite realized that his transit plan, written on the back of a napkin, and that’s why I’m showcasing it and explaining it.  And when people actually find out the truth, they will understand that it doesn’t work.”

Chow, Tory and candidate Doug Ford have all committed to participating in an arts and culture mayoral debate today at noon.  Ford came under heavy criticism on Friday for dropping out of the Empire Club debate at the last minute.  At a campaign event yesterday, he said he plans to attend many debates before election day.  “I look forward to going to all the debates,” Ford said, “and talking about our accomplishments and going back to the basics.”

The three main contenders have all promised to take part in the mayoral debate at the ZoomerPlex hosted by AM 740’s Dale Goldhawk on October 10th.
