TORONTO'S NEW MAYOR UNVEILS INNER CIRCLE

As of today, John Tory is Mayor of Toronto.

He arrived at City Hall about 6:30 this morning for what is expected to be a busy day. One of the first official items on his agenda is something the mayor of Ontario’s largest city hasn’t had for a long time: a face-to-face meeting with the Premier.

Tory and Kathleen Wynne met this morning.

The new mayor has also announced his picks for the committee chairs who will form the executive. His right-hand will be Denzil Minan-Wong as Deputy Mayor. But he also wants three other councillors to serve as Deputy Mayors responsible for their respective areas of the city: Glenn de Baeremaeker in Scarborough, Vince Crisanti in Etobicoke, and Pam McConnell in the old City of Toronto.

Many of the other selections were on the executive under Rob Ford, but they’ll have different portfolios. Gary Crawford gets the nod as Budget Chair and Josh Colle will head the TTC. Jaye Robinson will take over from Minan-Wong at Public Works. Ana Bailao, Michelle Berardinetti, and Mary Margaret-McMahon will join the Executive that did not include any woman during the last year of Rob Ford’s term in office.

Tory’s office says Norm Kelly is taking a lower profile after a hectic year as de-facto Mayor.

He’s also recommending Council re-appoint Frances Nunziata as Speaker with Shelley Carroll as her Deputy.

The new mayor’s reputation as a consensus builder may face an early challenge. He wants to sit on the Police Services Board, allong with Shelley Carroll and Lee Chin. But Michael Thompson is reportedly lobbying councillors about holding onto his position as vice-chair. Councillors have to approve appointments to the police services board.
