This is the time of year when certain songs are heard frequently.

But which of the songs of Christmas are heard most often?

The rights agency, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, has compiled a list of the most-performed songs of the season. And topping the list is a song written 80 years ago. Santa Claus is Coming to Town was originally written by John Coots and Haven Gillespie in 1934 for radio star Eddie Cantor to sing on a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade radio broadcast.

The second most-performed song is The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire), written by Mel Torme and Bob Wells.

Although it’s the biggest-selling song of all time, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is number three.

Winter Wonderland is fourth, and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas is fifth.

The list does not include songs in the public domain, such as most carols and classical compositions.
