They say you can’t fight City Hall.
The man who is now the face of City Hall is discovering that himself.
In a series of year-end interviews, Mayor John Tory says he is working to overcome the resistance to change among some city bureaucrats.
Tory says he’s bringing a new perspective to running the city that differs from the Ford administration. He says, for the last four years, no one has been pushing bureaucrats to find ways of doing things faster, better, cheaper, and in a more customer-friendly way.
Tory says he hopes that, a year from now, people will begin to notice an improvement from some of the things he has already put in place, including a promise to start towing vehicles that block traffic during rush hour. He says he is encouraged that companies are talking about how to avoid being towed and ticketed when the new policy begins in January.
The new mayor has many ambitious short-term transit plans, including restoring 41 bus routes that were scrapped during the Ford years. Can he do that and hold the line on tax increases? He says he can keep tax increases to at or below the rate of inflation.
Tory is now in budget talks to find ways of bringing in his new plans while keeping to his campaign promise on taxes.
