Canadians born in the early 1960’s with deformities caused by thalidomide their pregnant mother’s took for morning sickness won’t be learning details of a federal aid package this week. But Health Minister Rona Ambrose is promising that a settlement is still on track. According to her office, the minister called the head of the Thalidomide Victims Association of Canada on Thursday to share her “personal commitment to providing additional support to survivors.”
The Conservative government backed an opposition motion on December 1st to extend full support to Canadians affected by thalidomide. The Thalidomide Victims Association had set today as a deadline for the federal government to announce a financial aid package for Canadians harmed by the drug. It’s seen as an emotional setback for victims anticipating assistance to cope with their failing health.
