As the job posting for Toronto’s next police chief goes up, speculation is rampant on who would be the best candidate.

Vancouver’s long serving chief Jim Chu has announced his retirement, which could put him in the running to replace Bill Blair.  But it might be a nonstarter. Chu has said he has “no interest in other positions right now.”

The president of the Toronto Police Association would like to see someone promoted from within.  Mike McCormack says, “if you were to go outside, there would have to be a very good reason to do that.”

Among the qualified candidates within the Toronto Police Service are Deputy Chief Peter Sloly and Deputy Chief Mark Saunders.  There are also former Toronto officers leading forces around the province who might be considered; Hamilton Chief Glenn Decaire, Niagara Region’s Jeff McGuire and Barrie chief Kim Greenwood.

The Toronto Police Services board will name Chief Blair’s successor in April.
