The Royal Conservatory of Music is teaming-up with the renowned Kronos Quartet in a project called Fifty For The Future.

Starting in the 2015-16 season the project will commission 50 new works over five years – devoted to the most recent approaches to music for string quartet. The initiative is designed expressly for the training of students and emerging professionals.

A group of composers from around the world – 25 women and 25 men -will receive commissions representing the state of the art of the string quartet in the 21st century.

The Royal Conservatory’s yearly “21C” Music Festival, during the last week of May is the only Canadian institution participating in the project – and some of the other participants include Carnegie Hall, The Barbican in London and CAL Performances of Berkely, California.

The first composers – five men and five women – will create works for Kronos to premier during the 2015-16 season.
