A highly pathogenic H5N2 virus is responsible for a bird-flu outbreak in southwestern Ontario.

And the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the virus is the same one that caused a large outbreak in British Columbia – that began last December.

The H5N2 has also been recently found in a number of U.S. states.

Paul Mayers is the food inspection agency vice-president.

He says Canada will notify the World Organization for Animal Health, known as the OIE : the organization must be notified when there are outbreaks caused by highly pathogenic bird-flu viruses.

Another farm has been added to the list of quarantined operations, bringing the total to nine – but the virus has only been found on one farm.

That operation had 34,000 turkeys housed in a number of barns before the outbreak began – and approximately 7,500 of them have died.

Mayers says the rest will be euthanized.
