There’s not only labour unrest among Ontario’s public high school teachers, elementary teachers are becoming increasingly unsettled.

Sam Hammond is the President of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario.  He says he’s waiting for the government and school boards’ association to take “offensive” concessions off the table.  Otherwise, he says, all options will be considered after May 10th.  That’s the date the public elementary teachers will be in a legal strike position.

Hammond says the union is not interested in negotiating concessions and the current offer on the table.

His comments come as Sudbury-area public high school teachers begin the second day of a strike.  Durham Region public high school teachers have been off the job for 8 days.  Peel Region public high school teachers have set a strike date for Monday.

Education Minister Liz Sandals told reporters yesterday the government never expected bargaining to be a cakewalk because there is no money for pay increases, something Finance Minister Charles Sousa reiterated.

“I’ve made it very clear there is no money in the kitty for increased compensation without finding savings,” he said.

The province’s English Catholic teachers recently voted 94.2 percent in favour of a strike.  They won’t be in a legal strike position until mid-June at the earliest.
