The Canada Council for the Arts is simplifying its programs for grant applications – as it tries to keep up with a growing shift towards multidisciplinary art forms – and other trends.

The council will switch to six national, non-disciplinary programs – from the current 147 discipline-based programs –  in 2017.

That’s because it says it wants to offer “a simpler, more artist-centred application process – to respond proactively to current trends and issues in the arts.”

But artists currently eligible for grants will remain eligible – under the new funding model.

The new grant programs include one focused on aboriginal arts – and one aimed at promoting the global profile of Canadian artists.
