How much is too much exercise when it comes to maintaining a healthy heart?

A study of some 33,000 Swedish men between the ages of 51 and 69 looked at whether too much exercise can actually be harmful to heart health.

The men completed a survey asking them about the type of physical activity they engage in and duration of this exercise in the previous year.  They were also asked to remember how much they exercised when they were 30.

Controlling for the presence of other risk factors for heart disease such as diabetes and hypertension, the researchers found that the men with moderate exercise levels had a decreased risk of heart disease.  In fact, the scientists discovered that walking or cycling 20 minutes a day can reduce a 60 year old man’s risk of heart failure by a fifth.

They also discovered that an extremely high level of physical activity was associated with an increased risk of heart failure.
