Only 3 in 10 Canadian doctors appear willing to assist a gravely ill patient who wants to end their life, while 6 in 10 want no part of it.

A new poll conducted by the Canadian Medical Association serves as a backdrop as members of the doctors’ group hold their annual meeting in Halifax and try to come up with a position on the complex, emotionally charged issue of physician assisted death.

Doctor Chris Simpson is president of the CMA. He says “the challenge is to create rules and regulations that ensure patients have access to the end of life care they want, while ensuring doctors are not forced to engage in care that clashes with their religious and moral beliefs.”

A Supreme Court of Canada ruling in February, ended the ban on physician assisted death. The federal government has been given a year to come up with replacement legislation.
