The theatre world is mourning the loss of James Houghton, who has succumbed to cancer at the age of 57.
Houghton founded The Signature Theater in New York in 1991. It was notable because it presented the work of just one playwright per season; stipulating that the playwright was both American and living.
Houghton served as a director of the Drama Division at Julliard and in 2012 he was honoured by The Acting Company with the John Houseman Award for his profound commitment to developing American actors and building a diverse audience for the theatre.
