Two mosquito traps in York region have tested positive for West Nile virus – in Markham.

York Region’s medical officer of health says residents can take simple steps to reduce the risk of West Nile virus – and exposure to mosquitoes.

Dr. Karim Kurji says people should cover up when heading outside – especially during dusk and dawn – and get rid of standing water around their property –  to reduce mosquito breeding.

As part of its West Nile virus control plan, York Region places larvicides in catch basins – to interrupt mosquito breeding.

Other stagnant public water sources, including roadside ditches, also are treated.
