A terror suspect has been killed in a what’s described as a “high stakes” standoff with RCMP officers in Strathroy, Ontario, near London.

It’s being widely reported that an internal government document circulating earlier in the day stated concerns about a lone man planning to launch a suicide attack with an improvised explosive device in a major Canadian city.  Another report reveals GO Transit and the TTC were warned about a possible threat but not at a specific location before the terror suspect was killed.

The Mounties say they received credible information that the suspect planned to create mass casualties in a busy area during rush hour.

Neighbours of the suspect, described as 23 year old Aaron Driver, say they heard an explosion from his house and then gunshots.

In a statement last evening, RCMP said they had taken action to thwart the threat but provided few other details. We are expected to learn more at an afternoon news conference.

Aaron Driver had been known to police due to his support for the Islamic State terror group.

Driver was released on a terrorism related peace bond in June of last year, days after police raided his residence in Winnipeg.

In an interview with the CBC earlier this year, Driver voiced his support for the 2014 Parliament Hill attack and the attack of two police officers in Quebec.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale released a statement last night which reads:

“With respect to the police and security actions taken in Canada today, I have discussed the situation with the Prime Minister to confirm that public safety has been and continues to be properly protected.”
