First she was a Silver Penney, then she was a Bronze Penny and now our Penny Oleksiak is pure Gold.

Penny Gold

The 16-year-old swimmer from East York captured gold in the 100-metre freestyle, adding her stunning fourth medal, the most by a Canadian at a single Summer Olympics.

The Toronto native tied American Simone Manuel in a new Olympic record time of 52.70 seconds.  Manuel made history by becoming the first African-American to win gold in the pool.  Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom was third in 52.99 seconds.

Olecksiak, who learned to swim in a neighbour’s pool, now accounts for 4 of Canada’s 7 medals at the Rio Olympic games.
