Voters go to the polls in four federal byelections Monday, including one in Toronto.

The riding of Scarborough-Agincourt was left vacant after the death of Liberal backbencher Arnold Chan. It’s been Liberal territory since the 1980s and Chan’s widow, Jean Yip, is hoping to keep it that way as she runs to take the place of her late husband.

“It would be very special, I think he would be very proud. In part it’s for him, because the community has given him so much, as well as our family and I wanted to give back,” explained Yip.

Running against her for the New Democrats is Brian Chang who has the backing of the new NDP leader Jagmeet Singh.

“People are excited about Jagmeet Singh as the new leader of Canada’s NDP. They’re bringing him up at the door, they’re bringing up the issues that matter to them like precarious work, affordable housing, the lack of access for transit and climate change, and we’re happy to respond to them,” Chang detailed.

As for the Conservative candidate, DaSong Zhou is backed by former Toronto city councillor Doug Ford, who’s been tweeting his endorsement of the Zhou.

The other three federal byelections are in Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Labrador and British Columbia.
