Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa says the provincial budget won’t be balanced – when it’s brought down on March 28th.
The announcement is a reversal of a key Liberal promise – as the province approaches a June election.
Sousa says there will be a deficit of less than one per cent of Ontario’s gross domestic product – starting next year – and he told a business audience in Toronto that the move is meant to boost growth and allow more investment – in areas such as health care and child care.
The governing Liberals posted the province’s first balanced budget in a decade last year – and had projected balanced books through to 2019-20.
