The government’s has announced it will give 444 municipalities $40-million from its share of federal marijuana taxes to help Ontario’s 444 municipalities cover law enforcement and safety costs once pot’s legalized.
That money will come from the first two years of federal excise duties on marijuana producers.
It’ll ensure municipalities have resources to enforce new laws and combat related issues such as impaired driving and the illegal sale of pot.
The province says the money will be provided on a-per-household-basis and be adjusted so every municipality receives a minimum $10,000.
The government’s also creating a Cannabis Intelligence Co-ordination Centre to help close any illegal storefront dispensaries, fund sobriety test training to help police detect impaired drivers and create a legal team to support prosecution of drug-impaired motorists.
Meanwhile, the Ontario Cannabis Store will be the brand name of the province’s marijuana agency, including its stores and online channel.
