The federal privacy commission’s asked Loblaw Companies for more information about its decision to request some customers to provide additional personal information in order to receive a gift card as a goodwill gesture after the grocer’s admitted role in the bread price-fixing scandal.
Customers began raising concerns after the company was asking some of them for copies of their driver’s licence or utility bill.
Loblaw has said the information is for verification purposes only and would then be destroyed.
The company says the vast majority of customers won’t be required to submit the additional information.
Ontario’s former privacy commissioner Ann Cavoukian told Zoomer Radio’s ”Fight Back” with Libby Znaimer, what Loblaw is doing is ”completely unacceptable” and that consumers should ”boycott Loblaw”.
”If I was them (Loblaw), I would urge them to issue an apology right away and get rid of this stupid practice of seeking some people’s driver’s licences, and they don’t say which people, so those customers who are targeted are going to be doubly incensed that they’re the ones who are being targeted.”
