The motion, a proposal from Mayor John Tory, begins the process of having an independent, external review of missing person procedures.
”This is one of those times, in the public domain and they arise all the time in the public domain quite properly so, when an independent, external review is necessary to maintain, and in some cases to renew trust and confidence,” said Tory, who’s a member of the Police Services Board.
Police Chief Mark Saunders, who’s been harshly criticized for the ongoing investigation into alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur, supports an outside review.
”At the end of the day, if we’re going to get it right as an organization, part of the process is to make sure that we’re actively listening and understanding what the dynamics are of today’s environment, what we need to do as an organization to improve upon our relationships.  And this is just one of those moments again,” said Saunders.
Some in the LGBTQ community wants a public inquiry now, saying they cannot wait until the justice system deals with McArthur’s case.
