For much of the past week, Facebook has been tangled in controversy involving Cambridge Analytica, and how the firm with ties to Donald Trump’s U.S. presidential campaign improperly obtained and exploited personal data from 50-million Facebook users.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks during the 2013 TechCrunch Disrupt conference on September 11, 2013 in San Francisco, California. The TechCruch Disrupt Conference runs through September 11.

Wednesday night, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg broke his silence and apologized.

“This was a major breach of trust and I’m really sorry about that this happened. We have a basic responsibility to protect people’s data and if we can’t do that then we don’t deserve to have the opportunity to serve people,” Zuckerberg explained.

Zuckerberg also told CNN, it’s time to impose more regulations on technology companies as they play an increasingly important role in the world.

“There’s a lot of hard work that we need to do to make it harder for nation states like Russia to do election interference to make it so that trolls and other folks can’t spread fake news.”

There is a call from some Democratic senators for Mark Zuckerberg to testify before U.S. Congress about revelations that Cambridge Analytica harvested user information from the giant social media network. Zuckerburg told CNN he is happy to testify before Congress.
