A big push-back from Ontario’s elementary school teachers union – which is urging its members to teach a modernized sex-ed curriculum despite the new government’s decision to return to a  20-year-old lesson plan.

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario is denouncing the Progressive Conservative’s decision to scrap the curriculum – which was updated in 2015 – and reinstate one developed in 1998 – while it holds consultations on a new document.

Union President Sam Hammond says teaching an outdated curriculum that doesn’t  address issues such as consent and L-G-B-T-Q rights …is “irresponsible and discriminatory” and puts teachers in conflict with obligations they have to ensure their student’s safety and human rights.

At the annual meeting Hammond also said the union will defend any teacher who continues to teach the updated 2015 curriculum this fall – and will intervene in any legal proceedings before Ontario’s Human Rights Tribunal – and provide support to any applicant.
