Toronto Fire is taking an unusual step to encourage smokers in Parkdale to stop throwing out their butts.
For the first time, the fire service has launched an ad and public education campaign focusing on a specific neighbourhood.
Data shows that over a five-year period, Parkdale had more fires started from careless smoking than any other part of the city.
In fact, seven residents have died there the last five years.
Many were the result of tenants flicking lit cigarette butts from their balconies.
Residents will see posters depicting a hand holding a lit cigarette with the line ”Don’t be a flicking idiot … tossed butts start fires.”
Another shows a teddy bear on fire with the line ”Kill your butts, not your neighbours … tossed butts start fires.”
Fire education officers will also be going door-to-door to deliver the message in Parkdale.
