Heavy, dark smoke earlier forced the evacuation of nearby residents from their homes and several schools in the area.
Fire Chief Matthew Pegg says it appears today’s fire is separate from a smaller one Monday.
Mayor John Tory, who visited the school to survey the damage, wants to assure area residents the cause of both fires, as yet undetermined, will be investigated by the Fire Marshal’s Office and Toronto police.
Tears streaming down her face, Principal Donna Drummond says she’s ”devastated” and ”heartbroken,” pointing out the high school is full of historically significant architecture, including the auditorium with stained glass windows and pillars.
York Memorial Collegiate Institute officially turned 90 Monday as it’s cornerstone was laid May 6, 1929.
Celebrations had been planned for the end of the month.
