While there’s no cure for dementia, the World Health Organization says there’s much that can be done to delay or slow onset and progression of the disease that affects 50-million worldwide.
In its first recommendations to reduce the risk, the WHO released guidelines that include regular physical exercise, not using tobacco, drinking less alcohol, maintaining healthy blood pressure and eating a healthy diet — particularly a Mediterranean one.
”Actually, what’s good for your heart is good for your brain,” says the WHO’s Dr. Neerja Chowdhary.
The international health body also warns against taking supplements such as B vitamins, anti-oxidants, Omega-3 and ginkgo, saying there’s strong evidence they do not prevent mental decline.
The WHO also does not endorse games and other activities aimed at boosting thinking skills, adding they can be considered for those with normal capacities or mild impairment, but that there’s low to very low evidence of benefit.
