It is good news for cyclists in Toronto.

City councillors voted Wednesday to approve a plan which will expand Toronto’s cycling network.

It includes 120 kilometres of new cycling infrastructure to be built in the short term with 70 kilometres of routes to be studied, all at a cost of $48-million.

But the cycling network will not include bike lanes on Jarvis Street.

Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam introduced and lost a motion to reverse a decision made in 2012 to get rid of the bike lanes on Jarvis.

“If city council supports the reintroduction, the re-installation of the Jarvis bike lanes, you will undo one of the worst policy pieces of the Rob Ford legacy,” Wong-Tam told fellow councillors before the vote.

When Jarvis returned to its original configuration of a reversible centre lane for traffic, bike lanes were added on neighbouring Sherbourne Street instead.

Staff will look at options for University and Bloor lane extensions, as well as a pilot project along The Danforth.
