Will Canadian seniors be impressed by Andrew Scheer’s promise to increase the age credit by $1000?

The Conservative Leader told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer, this measure, along with others, will benefit the lives of older Canadians, especially those with lower incomes.

“We’re promising to cancel the carbon tax. We know that seniors on fixed incomes are hit the hardest by the carbon tax. We’re also going to take the HST and GST off home energy bills, so again leaving more money in the pockets of Canadian seniors to help them get ahead,” Scheer went on to explain. The age credit is income-tested, so an individual 65 and older could receive up to $150 more a year, and a couple, up to $300 more a year.

But CARP’s Chief Policy Officer Marissa Lennox says the promises aren’t enough.

“If that’s all they’re offering for seniors, I think they really need to step up their game,” Lennox explained, “The GST on home housing, that I think is more significant because that’s cash back in the pocket.”

Last week, the Trudeau Liberals offered to increase Old Age Security for Canadians 75 and over, and boost the Canada Pension Plan survivor’s benefit for widows and widowers over 65.

When surveyed, 98 percent of CARP members say they regularly vote in elections.
