Saying it infringes on their charter rights to collective bargaining, four major Ontario teachers unions are launching court challenges to provincial legislation that caps public-sector wage increases to 1%.
The heads of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association and Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens (AEFO), say the law ”seeks to unilaterally impose limits on the ability of workers to negotiate compensation.”
ETFO president Sam Hammond says Bill 124 amounts to a ”clear demonstration of bad faith on the part of the government.”
Meanwhile, Treasury Board President Peter Bethlenfalvy says the law constitutional, adding he would not have proposed it if he did not think it would stand up in court.
