Less than 24 hours after the house voted largely along party lines to impeach President Donald Trump, they were back and this time voted in a bipartisan way to support the new USMCA trade deal.

The initial deal was agreed to a year ago and representatives from Canada, the U.S. and Mexico signed a few revisions last week in Mexico City.

That seemed to be enough to sway the concerns of some Democratic members of Congress. The House voted 385-41 in favour of the revised USMCA deal.

The Mexican Senate had already approved the deal while Canada is yet to ratify.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently sent details of the revised deal to opposition party leaders for their review. Given that Canada has a minority Parliament, the Liberals will need some opposition support to get the deal through.

Trump had threatened to pull the U.S. out of the existing NAFTA deal if the latest deal wasn’t ratified by all countries.

The U.S. Senate also has to approve the deal before it heads to Trump’s desk. Both the Canadian Parliament and U.S. Senate are expected to tackle the deal in the new year.
