The troubles continue for medical services company LifeLabs.
After they revealed earlier this month that up to personal information of up to 15-million patients was vulnerable to hackers, the company now faces possible legal action in the case.
An unproven statement of claim was filed in Ontario Superior Court was filed on Friday. The proposed suit alleges negligence, breach of contract and violating customers’ confidence.
Proposed plaintiffs are asking for $1.13-billion in compensation. They argue damaged credit and reputation, wasted time and mental anguish.
In announcing the breach, LifeLabs said they had informed Ontario and B.C. privacy commissioners on Nov. 1.
They also admitted to paying a ransom to hackers to secure the information.
Stolen data was said to possibly include addresses, passwords, health card numbers and lab test results.
