It’s shaping up to be a massively eventful year in U.S. politics.
The Democrats will begin selecting their Presidential challenger starting on February 3rd at the Iowa caucuses. Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren all remain in the top tier of candidates but other faces like South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg remain a target for candidate as he’s polling highly in some states.
There’s also the small matter of President Donald Trump’s possible impeachment trial in the Senate.
He was impeached on two counts in the House of Representatives late this month but Speaker Nancy Pelosi hasn’t delivered the charges to the Senate until she sees how a trial would take place.
Trump also begins the new year facing several major foreign policy challenges.
Troops are still engaged in America’s longest war in Afghanistan.
North Korea hasn’t given up its nuclear weapons.
North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has demanded sanctions be withdrawn before he stands down his country’s nuclear arsenal.
And there are increased tensions with Iran, consequences of Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from Syria and erratic ties with European countries and other Western allies.
