After telling Canadians wearing a mask could give them a ”false sense” of security, the country’s top public health official now says wearing a non-medical mask can help stop the spread of COVID-19.
In January, Dr. Theresa Tam said wearing masks can sometimes make things worse, ”if the person puts their finger in their eyes or touches their face under their mask.”
The top doctor at the Public Health Agency of Canada says wearing a mask could encourage them to relax other measures such as physical distancing.
Just days ago, Dr. Tam said ”most people haven’t learned how to use masks,” that ”there is no need to use a mask for well people,” and that it’s not beneficial for someone who’s asymptomatic.
So why the about face?
”The Special Advisory Committee on COVID-19 has come to a consensus that wearing a non-medical mask, even if you have no symptoms, is an additional measure that you can take to protect others around in situations where physical distancing is difficult to maintain, such as in public transit or maybe at the grocery store,” Dr. Tam added.
She says medical masks are still need to protect doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers, so cloth masks and other alternatives are the way to go.
