After a weekend of nice weather, Toronto’s Mayor says most people in the city have been practicing physical distancing when outside in public spaces.

John Tory explained on Monday morning, the enforcement blitz over the weekend was primarily about educating people to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

“Basically what we had was hundreds of people given a warning, and I think that’s what we wanted and I said on Friday I didn’t want any tickets written over the weekend if that was possible,” Mayor Tory said.

A City of Toronto news release reiterates what the mayor says, that most residents are complying with the orders to stay more than 2 metres apart from other people and only gathering with people from the same household.

But there were plenty of people not adhering to the rules, as well.

3-1-1 operators received more than 140 complaints about public gatherings and unsafe behaviour at parks including High Park, Woodbine Park and Christie Pitts, along with Humber Bay Park East, Sunnyside Park and Trinity Bellwoods.

The release also says nearly 800 people were spoken to by bylaw officers and Toronto Police officers to educate them on physical distancing. Nearly four-hundred others were cautioned.

In addition, Toronto Public Health received 28 complaints related to non-essential businesses remaining open after Premier Doug Ford reduced the essential businesses list on Friday.
