Covid 19 has claimed the life of a Grammy-winning jazz trumpet virtuoso who was mentored by legend Miles Davis and performed with Davis at one of his final performances.

Wallace Roney first came to prominence in his early 20s, winning awards as one of the best young trumpeters of his generation. He rapidly advanced to working with the likes of Art Blakey and Tony Williams.

He recorded more than 20 albums and forged a path that embraced electronics, funk and world music.

Wallace Roney died at a hospital in his hometown of Paterson, New Jersey. He was 59.
