Today, Thursday April 23rd, marks the second anniversary of the Yonge Street van attack, but COVID-19 is preventing people from physically coming together to commemorate the grim occasion.

Instead, City of Toronto staff has taken measures to commemorate the tragedy digitally, first with a 9am video statement by Mayor John Tory and then with a 6pm online vigil hosted by We Love Willowdale and the Willowdale Interfaith Coalition.

“We will do something that carries just as much honour and just as much of our continuing to mourn and to heal at city hall but that’s all we can do in light of the circumstances in which we find ourselves. There’s also a virtual vigil on line this evening at 6 o’clock and I hope a lot of people will join in with that too because that was certainly a dark day in our city’s history and now two years ago,” Tory explained first thing on Thursday morning.

Mayor Tory will join Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer Thursday at noon to talk about the 2 year anniversary as well as the city’s ongoing efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also delayed the trial of the van driver who’s admitted to killing 10 people and injuring 16 others when he drove a rental truck down a stretch of Yonge Street south of Finch on April 23rd, 2018.
