Nearly 10,000 businesses have applied for the federal government’s wage subsidy program to held them deal with COVID-19 in the first five hours of its launch Monday morning.
”That gives you a sense of just how many people this program will help,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
”Right across the country, it’s going to keep businesses and workers connected.  And that gives people certainty that they’ll have a job now, and in the months to come, to support themselves and their family.”
Last week, an online calculator was launched on the Canada Revenue Agency website so businesses could determine how much they’d be able to claim.
So far, there have been 300,000 views.
The CRA’s planning to batch process the4 first week’s applications at the end of the week.
The government’s expecting ”hundreds of thousands” of applications will be made for businesses to keep employees as they await the reopening of the economy.
Officials have not been able to say how many currently receiving the Canada Emergency Response Benefit may be rehired through the wage subsidy,  but Trudeau is reminding Canadians they cannot received help from both programs at the same time.
The prime minister warns those who’ve received more than they’re entitled to, will have it clawed back later.
