Justin Trudeau’s mother Margaret received $312,000 for 28 speaking appearances between 2016 and this year.
All but $64,000 was picked up by ‘Me to We Social Enterprise,’ a separate for-profit entity.
WE describes it as a ”billing error”.
Trudeau’s brother Sasha received $40,000 for eight events.
This contradicts an earlier statement that WE never paid the prime minister’s family for speeches.
The Prime Minister’s Office has not commented on whether Justin Trudeau knew his mother and other family members had been paid, and if so, why he has not revealed it.
The PMO has issued this statement.
”The Prime Minister’s relatives engage with a variety of organizations and support many personal causes on their own accord.  What is important to remember here is that this is about a charity supporting students.  The Canada Student Service Grant program is about giving young people opportunities to contribute to their communities, not about benefits to anyone else.”
The government and charity recently ended a controversial partnership that would have seen WE Charity run a $900-million student grant program.
The federal ethics commissioner has launched an investigation.
