A new back-to-school plan has been approved by Toronto District School Board trustees, which will see $29.5 million in reserve funds used to hire hundreds of teachers to increase physical distancing in elementary schools, though not enough to fully space students.
The plan will also allow the cap on grade 4 to 8 classes to go down to 20 for schools in neighbourhoods with higher levels of COVID-19.
In addition, students in Toronto’s public schools will not return to class until September 15th, whether in person or online.
More detailed plans around virtual learning are expected to be released next week.
But TDSB spokesperson Ryan Bird told Zoomer Radio/Classical FM News, it won’t look like the online learning this past spring in the early days of the pandemic.
“Under virtual school this time around students would be taught the full curriculum, roughly the same timetable during the day, so live online learning in the morning and afternoon, and it would be a centrally taught program,” Bird explained.
In addition, under the TDSB’s new back-to-school plan, students in all grades, staff and visitors will have to wear face coverings with reasonable exceptions.
