As we wait on a vaccine for COVID-19 along with the annual flu shot, you may want to consider advice from Doctor Iris Gorfinkel.
“The flu shots are not yet available, but what are available now are the pneumonia shots, so that’s critical to get now,” Gorfinkel told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with guest host Jane Brown.
She explained there are two pneumonia vaccines available, “one of which is actually covered by insurance plans and that’s called Pneumovax 23 and that reduces invasive pneumococcal pneumonia by 75 percent, which is a huge reduction. The other shot is the Prevnar 13, and that’s important to get because that cuts the likelihood of pneumococcal pneumonia in half and those are one offs, once you have it, you don’t have to worry again.”
The Pneumovax 23 is covered for individuals over the age of 65, or those people deemed at high risk.
And Doctor Gorfinkel says the Prevnar 13 can be technically given to anyone over the age of 50, but she says it’s designed for those over the age of 60 or those who have high risk conditions.
