The animals went to No. 1 on the US singles chart with ‘The House of the Rising Sun.’ Their version became the most successful commercial version of this American folk song and would spend three straight weeks at the top of the charts.

In his book Chasing the Rising Sun: The Journey of an American Song, Ted Anthony discusses the approach the animals took with the arrangement:

All they needed was a memorable arrangement, one that reflected the tenor of the times and would captivate the audience. Valentine says the Animals simply took the chord sequence from the Dylan version and used arpeggios instead of strumming. That, Egan writes, “gave the hypnotic, winding feel to the arrangement.
