Documents obtained from The Canadian Press reveal representatives with the federal government have weighed the pros and cons of a financial deterrent aimed at discouraging people from drinking sugar filled beverages. Ottawa has been urged by the Heart and Stroke Foundation to impose a tax of five cents per 100 millilitres on sugar sweetened beverages … saying such a levy would raise 1.8 billion dollars a year for the public treasury.

In its pre-budget submission, the Heart and Stroke Foundation said health experts have described sugary drinks as a “significant driver of chronic disease and obesity.” We’ll be speaking with Manuel Arango, the Director of Health Policy and Advocacy for the Heart and Stroke Foundation about this new proposed sugar tax and ask you, our listeners if you feel pop should be taxed extra to deter Canadians from drinking it?
