The first round of negotiations for a new North American Free Trade Agreement will continue today in Washington. Talks began yesterday with a demand from US representatives for major changes to the quarter-century-old pact. Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister says it’s not up to Canadians to choose who’s the president of the United States, and Canada absolutely respects the democratic choice of the American people. Chrystia Freeland sidestepped questions in Washington about whether she feels uncomfortable negotiating a new NAFTA with this particular American administration … after U.S. President Donald Trump disbanded two business advisory panels following resignations from the councils by several CEOs because of his response to the racial violence in Virginia last weekend.
