Air Canada has joined a growing number of airlines that are respecting the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration ban on American carriers flying to Israel.
Luftansa and Air France have also joined the ban – which followed a Hamas rocket explosion about 5 kilometres from Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv.
The FAA said in a statement that the ban on flights is for 24 hours beginning at 12:15 p.m. EST (16125 GMT) on Tuesday.
The notice only applies to U.S. airlines – since the FAA has no authority over carriers from other nations.
The agency says it will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation, and updated instructions will be provided to U.S. airlines “as soon as conditions permit, but no later than 24 hours” from the time the directive went into force.
Even before the announcement, Delta and United Air Lines suspended service between the U.S. and Israel indefinately.
Meanwhile- Israel’s Transportation Ministry has called on airlines to reverse their decision, saying in a statement, “Ben Gurion Airport is safe and completely guarded for landings and departures.”
The statement also says , “There is no reason whatsoever that American companies should stop their flights- and hand terror a prize.”
