Toronto Lawyer and author William Kaplan has been appointed to try and bring an end to the labour dispute at Canada Post. It’s hoped a mediator can avert a threatened work stoppage by members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. The union issued a 72-hour strike notice Thursday, accusing Canada Post of forcing a labour disruption. The union says it plans no disruption to mail service but will restrict overtime on a rotating basis, one province at a time. Contract talks between the Crown corporation and CUPW reached an impasse this week with both sides saying they remain far apart on key issues including pay scales for rural letter carriers and proposed changes to pensions for future employees.Meantime, Canada Post has revealed that it earned a profit of about $1 million in the second quarter of operations this year. But in a statement, it warns its pension solvency deficit rose to an estimated 8.1-billion dollars as of July 1st — up from 6.1-billion at the end of last year.
