Music’s ability to soothe the symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s has been known for years. Now, a new BBC website is offering a dementia lifeline by connecting patients with the songs they love. Eventually, it’s hoped the site will build a database of music that’s effective at triggering memories. Yet research shows only 5 percent of senior’s care homes in the UK provide good quality music programs. Peter Edwards is with Britain’s Alzheimer Society and says programs like the “Singing for the Brain Choir” are rare but are transforming lives.
The BBC music website launched last Friday and allows people to browse more than 18 hundred songs, classical works and TV theme tunes from the last 100 years.
