U.S. presidential candidate Bernie Sanders joined a group of American diabetics who traveled across the border to buy cheaper insulin on Sunday.
Speaking at a pharmacy in the southwestern Ontario City, the Vermont senator decried the the high price of insulin in the United States, while railing against US pharmaceutical companies – accusing them of putting the lives of diabetics in danger:
Typically, a vial of insulin used by Type 1 diabetics costs about US$340 in the United States, roughly 10 times the price in Canada.
It’s not the first time Sanders has taken part in such a demonstration, making a similar medication trip to Canada in 1999
Sanders also campaigns on a pledge to introduce ”Medicare for All” and pointed to the Canadian model as an example.
Meanwhile, the surge in Americans crossing to border to purchase cheaper drugs. particularly insulin, has raised concerns about supply in Canada, leading 15 groups representing patients, health professionals, hospitals, and pharmacists to write a letter to the federal government, urging them to safeguard the Canadian drug supply.
