Toronto Animal Services is investigating after a coyote found near Hollywood Public School in North York Monday morning was shot and killed by police.
”There were concerns the animal would continue to roam and from a public safety standpoint, a decision was made to put the animal down,” according to police.
Apparently the call to shoot came from Animal Services because they believed it was the same coyote that bit two people in Bayview Village Park Sunday.
A city spokesperson says non-lethal ways of capturing it were considered.
”After consultations with wildlife experts at Toronto Wildlife Centre, it was determined that this could not safely guarantee the capture of the coyote,” said the spokesperson.
”This was not a viable option.”
It’ll be tested for rabies while Animal Services looks into whether someone was feeding the coyote and what made it act out in the first place.
Reaction on social media is mixed with some feeling it’s the best decision for public safety, while others disagree, saying the coyote was only defending itself because humans have overtaken its natural habitat.
