The Canadian government is disposing of more than half of its AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine stockpile because it can’t find any takers, either in this country or internationally.

According to figures from Health Canada, more than 13.6 million doses have already expired.

Just more than a year ago, Ottawa pledged it would donate almost 18 million doses of the vaccine to lower-income countries. As of late last month, about 9 million does had been delivered to 21 nations.

Canada also has donated more than 6 million doses of Moderna’s mRNA vaccine, but another 1.2 million of their vaccines have also been tossed out due to expiry dates.

NDP health critic Don Davies says it’s apalling for doses to expire when millions of people still haven’t received even a single shot.

“There is no excuse for such waste,” he says.
