Zilli Schmidt, a survivor of the concentration camps in Auschwitz and Ravensbrueck, has passed away at the age of 98.

She had grown to be a vocal supporter of acknowledging the Sinti and Roma genocide committed by the Nazis.

According to the foundation of Berlin’s Holocaust monument, Schmidt passed away on Friday.

As one of the last survivors of the genocide against the Sinti and Roma, the organisation claimed she “leaves behind a deep void.”

Schmidt, who was born to a Sinti family in the Thuringian region of eastern Germany, was sent to a concentration camp in 1942.

Her family was largely slaughtered in 1944 in Auschwitz.

She was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2021, which honours people who have made significant contributions to German society.
